Department of
Agronomy, NCYU
Mission and Goals
The Department of Agronomy is one of the
oldest departments in the College of Agriculture, National Chiayi University
(NCYU). Based on the national food strategy and the direction of the NCYU's
development, our mission is to educate students possess the abilities of
agricultural techniques innovation and application, focusing on the field
including new cultivars breeding, crop production improvement, and useful
medicine plants development. As it went to
21st century, agricultural development became more important to
obtain and invent higher quality crop production, to maintain and monitor
wonderful ecological environment quality, and to develop and sustain the
agro-resources. Agronomy does not degenerate as time goes by and moreover plays
a key role for food production systems, organic agro-ecosystem management, and linkages
between agricultural production and bio-environmental protection. Our department has the missions to carry forward the cause and forge ahead
into the future. Such as now, we endeavor to provide higher quality of
education resources and research equipments for training our students to have
expertise in multi-purpose crop development (i.e. food, medicine, energy, and
novel crops). And, in order to approach to sustainable development of agriculture
and the ecological conservation of safe agriculture and the regional
revitalization, the intellgent agriculture, the marketing brand extension,
certification system, and safe and healthy crop production are promoted with
the considerations of organic agricultural strategy and natural resource
protection in our department.
Faculty and Courses Offered
Currently, we have 11 full-time teachers,
including 3 full professor, 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and
1 instructors. All 11 of the full-time teachers were awarded the Ph.D. degree.
The undergraduate students are required to complete 128 credits and master
student program is required to complete 30 credits. The core courses
offered are Crop science, Plant physiology, Genetics, Crop breeding, Biostatistics,
Soil science and Biochemistry. For the sake of offering thematic and
extension courses for both undergraduate and graduate student, our teaching and
research activities are introduced into the multidisciplinary issues and
integral applications of modern agriculture in Taiwan.
Research Areas and
Developments
Our research fields are emphasized on
organic farming, plant tissue culture, molecular breeding to assist new
cultivars selection, healthy and energy crops, crop physiology and
biotechnology, soil conservation by phytoremediation. Our student will focus
their professional developments on the real works of agricultural practice and
management, which are including the R&D of agricultural technologies, the
intelligent agriculture, the ecological conservation, the diagnostics of crop
cultivation, the services of agronomic practices, and the marketing of
agricultural products.
Careers Opportunities
At present, the career opportunities of
our students are plenty. Students may take the advanced examination to get the
technical license as agronomy. If qualified by the national examination,
students graduated from our department can gain employments in government
agencies. Graduates can also work in private companies and develop their own
career. Some students may continue on their education for advanced degrees in
graduate institutes of agronomy, horticulture, biotechnology, bio-statistics,
plant protection, and agricultural extension and other academic institutes.
